In Ayurveda, Ajeerna or indigestion is more than just a temporary discomfort—it's the root of many diseases. Our ancient texts emphasize that when digestion is impaired, the whole body suffers. On the other hand, when digestion is restored, most ailments fade away naturally.
Types of Indigestion in Ayurveda
Ayurveda describes three primary types of Ajeerna, each based on an imbalance in the doshas:
Áma Ajeerna (Kapha-type)
Caused by sluggish digestion and mucus buildup.
Symptoms: Heaviness, nausea, swelling in cheeks and eyes, belching.
Vidagdha Ajeerna (Pitta-type)
Caused by excessive heat and acidity.
Symptoms: Burning sensations, sour belching, thirst, heartburn, sweating, giddiness.
Vishama Ajeerna (Vata-type)
Caused by erratic digestion due to air imbalance.
Symptoms: Abdominal pain, bloating, gas, delusion, distention.
Other lesser-known forms include:
Rasaeṣha Ajeerna: Indigestion of nutrients.
Dina Pāka: Food digested the next day.
Prativāsara Ajeerna: Indigestion after every meal.
Causes of Ajeerna
Irregular eating habits — too much, too little, or at wrong times
Unwholesome or incompatible foods
Drinking excessive water with meals
Suppression of natural urges
Daytime naps and insomnia
Emotional states like anger, anxiety, grief, fear, or jealousy
“When the mind is disturbed, even the most nutritious food becomes poison.”

Retention of gas
Heaviness in the body
Loss of appetite and aversion to food
